Part 2:

Part 1 of the blog focused on how I scaffolded a lesson to lead to using ‘modelling’ as a homework task. In Part 2, I look at how I developed this in the next lesson to build upon the prior learning and to continue the modelling process to help my learners extend their use of the Perfect Tense.

In week two, after sharing the homework passages together and identifying the fantastic examples of the Perfect Tense, we continued to build upon these structures, using a listening activity (Conti’s Listening Bingo – one of my favourites! - find examples here) and then once again, we reviewed the passage together to highlight the different Perfect Tense structures. I also added four new phrases (in italics) into the passage. Here it is:

Malgré les restrictions, j’ai passé un très bon weekend. Je me suis couchée de bonne heure vendredi soir parce que j’étais assez fatiguée après une journée difficile au travail. Samedi matin, je me suis levée à 7h30 quand même et je suis allée au parc près de chez moi où j’ai participé à un cours de fitness. Heureusement, il n’a pas fait trop froid. Après le cours, je suis rentrée chez moi, je me suis douchée et j’ai mangé le petit déjeuner.

Ensuite, j’ai fait quelques tâches ménagères ; le ménage, la lessive et le repassage et puis, j’ai planifié les repas pour la semaine et j’ai fait les courses en ligne – ce qui est beaucoup plus facile en ce moment.

Il y a un très beau lac à deux pas de chez moi, donc l’après-midi, j’ai retrouvé mes amies au lac. J’ai passé trois heures avec elles et je suis rentrée chez moi vers 17h.

Le soir, je me suis allongée sur le canape, j’ai allumé la télé et j’ai mangé une pizza. Quel bonheur !

We did lots of work around this passage such as ordering and disappearing words, and then for homework, I asked the learners to write 3-5 sentences to talk about their weekend using the models above – I explained that it didn’t matter if many were repeated from the week before as this was very important reinforcement. I also set the optional ‘challenge’ to use one or more of the phrases in red italics. The work produced was amazing!

Hier je me suis levée de bonne heure et malgré les restrictions, j’ai rencontré mon amie Angela. Elle a un petit chien blanc, il s’appelle Chalky, et nous avons fait une longue promenade respectant la distance des autres. Il y a beaucoup de belle campagne vallonée à deux pas de chez moi et nous avons profité de l’air frais. Le soir, j’étais fatiguée mais j’ai préparé le dîner quand même. Je me suis allongée sur le canapé vers 20h.  J’ai mangé du chocolat et j’ai allumé la télé et regardé un épisode du Serpent.

Malgré le mauvais temps, je me suis réveillé de bonne heure samedi matin. J’ai fait des courses en ligne, c’est beaucoup plus facile et plus sûr en ce moment. J’ai préparé une casserole de poulet dans la mijoteuse – très facile !  Le soir j’ai mangé la casserole de poulet et j’ai allumé la télé et j’ai regardé Engrenages – je l’adore !

I am trying to do the modelling tasks for all of my groups from higher beginners to advanced and I have found that the learners love sharing their work with the each other and value, more than ever at the moment, the time to listen and learn from each other. I always do this feedback in small groups of three or four at the start of class (after a warm up!) and then we come back together to share and to answer questions.

When the learners feedback, they don’t feedback on their own ‘performance’, they share all the brilliant things that the other learners have done. They are always so full of praise for each other which always set such a positive and uplifting mood for us to continue the lesson.
